The Eng, who refer to themselves as "Va" are possibly related to the Wa tribe. They live only in the foothills of the Kyaing Tong basin and are another diminishing tribe.Eng women often marry at the age of 14 or 15. The colorful ornaments suit their black garb. The Eng fear "water spirits" and therefore build their villages away from marshes and rivers.
Their villages are built along mountain ridges, and they use bamboo pipes to pipe in water.
The Eng FestivalThe Eng are animists and hold a festival at the full moon in November. The village elders travel from house to house, receiving food. Eventually the people gather at the home of the presiding Shaman. While scattering rice, the Shaman uses incantations to summon the ancestral spirits, and then dressed as a spirits the Shaman walks around the village, driving out evil spirits.
